This is a label that stirs a certain image in many minds. A misty, vague recollection of things Adirondack. A vision on the edge of your consciousness of a weathered, tanned, eagle-eyed woodsman. A master of all wilderness skills, able to hit his mark with ax, knife or gun in any weather. Noble, fearless, with a childlike awe of the woods and waters.
These are large shoes to fill and present day "Adirondack Guides" are often said to be unable to live up to this wispy, ethereal vision. Many make much to-do about how the new guides couldn't hold a candle to the real "Old Time Guide". My opinion, obviously slanted, is that the present day "Adirondack Guides" have the best qualities of the original guides plus we have the added advantage of skills that are way beyond the ability of the old guides. We are able to operate safely in many varied areas and conditions due to educational and technological advancements. The most important however, is that we share the bright seed of all guides. An awe and understanding of nature's beauty and power, and a desire to share these wonders of woods and waters with others while preserving that same fragile beauty. ...... Jerry |
