"Adirondack Guide"

                  by
        Jerry W. Roberts

Oh, what a joy to be the boy
   who took the other road.
I've spent my time in fen and glen
   and saw what nature showed.
While most ignored the beauty there
and lived their life in haste.
I've traipsed the hills and touched the sky;
'round this my life's been based.

The tide has swung and many now
   regret their chosen way.
They wish to see what I have seen
   and spend an outdoor day.
They call me "Guide" and ask to go
   to places never been.
So by my side I take them fro
   to visit fen and glen.

The Adirondacks are the place
where now I ply my trade.
This mystic range bids them to come
   to explore sun and shade.
They come from many different lands
   and different ways of life.
Their days are filled with city things
   with bustle and with strife.

They spend some time and get a taste
   of grandeur they have missed.
And always mourn for time they've lost
and say how I am blessed.
Blessed I am, how well I know
that this is sure, not lore.
Yes, I have had the best of all
   on mountain, lake and shore.

I hope they found some sweet release
   from problems left at home.
And found some joy to lift their load
as o'r the hills we'd roam.
If I have done my job this day
and they have gained some peace.
Then memories they've built with me
   will never really cease.

I'm glad I chose the other road
   though doubts I've had galore.
And took the time to see and learn
   what nature held in store.
While most ignored the beauty there
and now feel life a waste.
I've traipsed the hills and touched the sky;
'round this my life's been based.
